Personal Hygiene - Toothpaste

I have been asked to speak about personal hygiene - deodorants, toothpaste, mouthwash, lotion, and perfume / cologne.  Since we have talked already about soap and shampoo, I guess it is about time. :)

We have discussed many times your need to read EVERY label... even those you think are safe.  Even those things that you get from what you think is a holistic grocery store - Whole Foods was just in the news about the amount of bad foods that are on their shelves.  So, take care when shopping - even in those "healthy" places.

Toothpaste is a very important discussion for us to have so let's start there.  If you look on the back of your toothpaste container you will find "Active Ingredient: Sodium Fluoride."  Anytime you see the words "active ingredient" you need to take care.  This ingredient could be dangerous if ingested.  And this is very true with the active ingredient in toothpaste - fluoride.  Also, take note of the caution on your toothpaste container - "Warnings:  keep out of reach of children under 6 years of age.  If more than used for brushing is accidentally swallowed, get dedical help or contact a POISON CONTROL CENTER immediately."

Sodium Fluoride is a VERY dangerous product when ingested.  The story I have been told on why it is in the US water supply and in toothpaste is a sickening one - and I can't tell you if it is 100% accurate or not - I will let you determine what you want to believe.  Fluoride is a dangerous by-product of the creation of aluminum.  As the production of aluminum grew in the US this toxic byproduct somehow had to be disposed of in such a way that it would not kill every thing it came in contact with.  Since a lethal dose (adult) of fluoride is 1 - 10 grams it would take something major to disperse the amount of fluoride being created.  It was decided that the best way of dispersing this poison was to put it in the water supply.  And to make it more palatable, it was added also to toothpaste and dentists were trained to understand that fluoride was a good thing.  That it fought cavities.  This is untrue.

What else should you know about Fluoride?  It is used in Prozac, rat poison, and Sarin Nerve Gas - yes the same nerve gas that was released in the Japanese subway by terrorists.  It has been shown to reduce lifespan, cause cancer, could be a factor in Alzheimer's disease, infertility, brain abnormalities, and a variety of other life threatening diseases.  Remember that you get fluoride not only from your toothpaste - but also from your drinking water and your shower.  Yes, you do absorb it into your body through your skin... are you thinking twice about those long hot showers you have been taking?   I should hope so.
