Artificial Colors

We have discussed your need to start reading your labels.  You need to really pay attention to more than just the calories on those containers.  Check sodium levels, check for artificial sweeteners, chemicals, and artificial coloring.  You will be amazed at the amount of artificial colors that you will find.  Why should I bother?

Artificial colors have been proven to increase the likelihood of cancer, ADD/ADHD, and severe allergies among other things.  Did you know that the UK has already banned the use of certain POPULAR food colors?  Some states are requiring that a full listing of artificial colors be provided on food labels.  The most dangerous ones are listed below with their findings - this is by no means a complete listing and this post is more for education - you need to be a smart consumer!

The report Food Dyes – A Rainbow of Risks [download PDF] reviews the risks that have been known for quite some time:
Blue 1, Red 40, Yellow 5, and Yellow 6 have long been known to cause allergic reactions in some people. CSPI says that while those reactions are not common, they can be serious and provide reason enough to ban those dyes. Furthermore, numerous studies have demonstrated that dyes cause hyperactivity in children.
Tests on lab animals of Blue 1, Blue 2, Green 3, Red 40, Yellow 5, and Yellow 6 showed signs of causing cancer …
Yellow 5 also caused mutations, an indication of possible carcinogenicity, in six of 11 tests…
In addition, according to the report, FDA tests show that the three most-widely used dyes, Red 40, Yellow 5, and Yellow 6, are tainted with low levels of cancer-causing compounds, including benzidine and 4-aminobiphenyl in Yellow 5.

Think about a single bag of M & Ms?  How about Easter candy?  Please be very aware of the food colors that are being added to your foods.

Alternative Medicines

I have been asked several times about the different types of medicine that fall under alternative medicine.  Here is a partial list with a bit of information on each.

Naturopathy - the belief that the body can heal itself if provided with the proper diet, exercise plan, and mental well being.  Ailments are warning signs that the body is not healthy and changes must be made to one of the three pillars to bring the body back to a healthy state.

Homeopathy - the belief that small preparations of natural remedies will stimulate the immune system to heal itself.  Similar to immunizations - give a diluted form of the disease in small amounts to stimulate the body to create natural immunity to the disease.

Reflexology - massaging of the hands, feet, and ears to stimulate internal healing.  Our hands, feet, and spine all have points that are all directly related to our organs.  If you run your hands lightly over your hands, do you have any tender spots? knots? pain? Massaging these areas will also stimulate the directly related organ.  The webbing between your thumb and pointer finger - if massaged - has been known to relieve migraines.  Have you ever noticed that when you are stressed, you rub your temples?  It automatically calms and relaxes you.  Have you ever found yourself touching your chin when you are thinking?  Yes, another acupressure / reflexology site.  http://www.reflexology-research.com/

Acupressure - applying pressure to specific sites to induce a change or stimulate an organ.  By applying pressure or centering energy at specific points you can change the energy flow and stimulate the immune system.  Many have used acupressure to quit smoking, to stop addictions, to heal emotional scars, and to heal ailments.  http://www.acupressure.com/

Acupuncture - inserting needles into specific points on the body to relieve / heal ailments and to relieve pain.  This is a very well known Chinese therapy that many people use for many of the same reasons as acupressure - the primary difference between the two are the needles.  http://chinese-school.netfirms.com/acupuncture-whatis.html

Chiropractic Medicine - adjusting the spine to relieve ailments.  As with reflexology, the understanding that there are points along the spine that directly relate to organs http://www.dorn-method.com/index_files/SpineOrgansConnectionsTable.htm  With Chiropractic medicine, the proper adjustments to the spine will extend to the connected organs and aid in healing.

Aromatherapy - in the simplistic of terms, aromatherapy is healing with scents.  Smells carry the strongest memories we have.  How often have you smelled something and immediately thought of an ex boyfriend / girlfriend?  Or smile because that smell brings a flash of a favorite childhood memory?  My favorite smell is cinnamon - it carries with it the memory of my grandparents and my childhood.  Smell is a very STRONG healer.  Aromatherapy can involve baths, candles, massage, pretty much any where and anything.

Massage - healing through touch and pressure points on the body.  The healing power of touch is HUGE.  We transfer energy when we touch one another.  Massage for some is intensely personal and intimate.  Someone with energy medicine back ground is able to feel spots on the body that need attention.  Knots / tenderness in certain areas may relate back to organs.  If you visit a masseur, make sure to pay close attention to any sore spots and check online to see what organs they relate back to - and check to see if you have a problem, disease, illness related to that organ.

Energy Medicine - healing by transferring, realigning, and / or absorbing energy from others.  Donna Eden is the first person to openly discuss energy medicine.  She is able to see energy, like some can see auras and is able to use her energy to fix energy paths in others.  She related a story in her book about a woman that had a bad hip - it had bothered her for years.  Donna ran her hands lightly over the area and both women began to quietly weep - in repairing the energy flow in that area, she had released a memory that had been trapped that was very painful.  Once relieved, she never had pain in that hip again.

Herbology - using herbs to heal.  This can be by eating the fresh herbs, creating tinctures, poultices, etc.  Herbs have a lot of power in them.  Using them requires an experienced hand - herbs can cause the same adverse reactions as pharmaceutical drugs - so please use caution and study the herbs before using.  Some herbs do have reactions with pharmaceutical drugs.

Get High on Exercise!

Exercise has a variety of different stigmas - some people view it as a means to make themselves thinner.... some view it as that dreaded thing that the MUST do... some refuse to partake... and some love it... crave it even.  Exercise can play a very positive role in your life.

If you are one of the people that hate exercise - you get sharp pains, you get winded, your knees hurt, your back hurts... STOP!  Let's take this too step by step.

Step one - You need to change the way you are looking at exercise.  Hopefully by the time you finish with this post you will have what you need to change the way you look at exercise.

Step two - GET UP!!  Laying down = worst possible position for ANYTHING but sleeping.  Sitting = lowers metabolism, slows blood flow, leads to clots, heart disease, poor organ function, diabetes, and a whole host of ailments.  Standing = burns more calories than the previous two, but no positive step forward.  Walking = minimally raises metabolism; when you walk - walk with purpose - swing your arms and walk faster.  I am not asking you to go from sitting on the couch to running a marathon.  You can't do it all at once... you have to take baby steps.

The easiest way to get step to to work, is to find something you love to do - dancing? biking? hiking? blading? gardening? belly dancing? kick boxing? martial arts? horseback riding? swimming? ceramics? antiques? golf? Is there something you have always wanted to do, but have never had the guts to do it... NOW IS YOUR TIME!!!  I bet there is someone in your circle that would love to try the same thing, but like you haven't had the guts to try it.  If you want it bad enough you can do it... just put one foot in front of the other.  You will notice I am sure I put a couple things in there that have NOTHING to do with exercise... I said we need to take baby steps.. if you aren't doing anything - getting up - getting ready - going out - doing something you love is your first baby step!!  Make big signs... make a pact with a friend... it is easier to be motivated to make a lifestyle change when you do it with someone.  So... what did you choose?

Step three - make it consistent.  You need to be doing SOMETHING at a minimum daily.  Now, WAIT!!!  Before you freak out on me... this doesn't mean you need sustained cardio (running, aerobics, kick boxing, etc) every day.... you need to be ACTIVE every day... for at least thirty minutes.  Walking, working in the yard, cleaning house, etc.. when you go out to get the mail - go for a walk - pay attention to how beautiful your surroundings are.  Can you walk to pick up the kids, rather than drive?  How about take the stairs rather than the elevator? Did you want dessert after dinner??  Walk to the ice cream parlor rather than drive.   Get into a routine of looking for ways to extend your exercise - or movement - every day.

Step four - make it last.  Cardio.. cardio.. cardio!  You WILL fall in love with cardio, I promise.  Most of us hate it because it hurts, it burns, etc... all cardio doesn't need to hurt.  My favorite home workout is a DVD on kickboxing (Gaiam - Kickbox: Core Cross Train DVD with Patricia Moreno).  The reason it is my favorite workout for home is because I get winded, and get a great workout, but without the pain of running or other types of workouts.  You need to get some type of sustained cardio workout at least three days a week (when you are ready) for no less than thirty minutes - obviously that may not be possible initially - do what you can... remember BABY STEPS!!

I highly recommend that when you get to the cardio stage that you choose several different types of workouts.  This benefits you in a variety of ways.  It gives you variety so that you don't get bored with the same routine.  It stresses different muscles for a better, well rounded weekly workout.  And it makes you try something different!  I recommend pilates / yoga at least once a week.  This helps bring you back to your center and grounds you.  I recommend some type of martial arts (not all are aggressive and competitive) - Tai Chi is on the low end and can help you calm your mind.  Tai Bo (kick boxing) is more aggressive and works many different muscles - a total workout.  I recommend some type of dance too - this will help you be more flexible, more centered, more self confident (oh yes!), and will make you happy!  I am a TERRIBLE dancer - but I love to 2-step (repetitive) and I love belly dancing (makes me feel very feminine)... find yours...

So.. now that I have given your your direction... let me explain the WHY!  This is the hook! :)  I used to be one of those people that HATED (I never use that word - ask my kids) and yes I do mean HATED exercise.  I tried doing too much at once - I got shin splints - I had side cramps...I hated it.  I wasn't drinking enough water, that was part of the problem.  Not getting enough water before, during and after exercise will cause muscle cramps, stresses the body and heart, and can cause additional problems related to dehydration.  Once I learned to properly warm up, build up to a good sustained workout that didn't HURT me, and then worked my way back down... something amazing started to happen.  I started getting happy... after class I was on a natural high... nothing could get me down, and I slept GREAT!  Which meant my daily life improved.  Why?

During sustained cardio endorphins are released into the bloodstream that affect us like a natural, giddy high.  It is a wonderful feeling - one you want to repeat over and over again!  This page has a great description for you: http://www.healthcentral.com/fitorfat/408/41285.html   Another benefit is a boost to your metabolism.  Your metabolism is boosted for 24 hours after a workout and that means that your body burns calories much better than when you are not exercising.  So... the goal... Get High on Exercise!!

Minerals / Vitamins

Depending on your diet you will more than likely need more vitamins / minerals.  We have all heard of yin and yang.  This is the delicate balance that exists in every facet of our existence.  Our health also maintains a yin / yang balance  Eating only fruits and vegetables tips the balance heavily in the yin direction.  Eating only animal protein tips the balance heavily in the yang direction.  Both are unhealthy.

Here is a general overview from one extreme to the other from Michael Tierra's book "the way of herbs":
Extreme Yin
  - watery fruits (orange), small fruits (hawthorn, juniper, lycii)
  - small fruits (cherry, blueberries), flowers (chamomile, honeysuckle, elder)
  - leaves (spinach, comfrey, alfalfa, skullcap)
  - roots (carrot, parsnip, turnip)
Balanced between Yin & Yang
   - seeds (rice, sunflower, oats), neutral roots / bark (echinachea, slippery elm, sassafras)
   - dairy (cheese), bitter roots / bark (rhubarb, genatian, cinnamon)
   - fish (tuna, salmon), long roots (dandelion, burdock, ginseng)
   - poultry (chicken, turkey)
Extreme Yang
   - red meat (beef, pork, venison), processed roots (rehmannia, red ginseng)

How do we get from here to the discussion of minerals and vitamins?  If we are eating a properly balanced diet rich in a full spectrum of colors and textures, you should have no need for supplements.  However, we not always have the ability to obtain enough of the proper nutrients in our foods.  If you eat a primarily Yang diet (meat & potatoes) you are more likely to have a deficiency in vitamins.  If you eat a primarily Yin diet (fruits & vegetables) you are more prone to mineral deficiencies.

Below is a SHORT list of important Vitamins and Minerals - please remember that ALL vitamins and minerals are important... if you feel you are lacking in any you should strive to change your diet to better accommodate your body's need than to take supplements.... if you can help it.

Iodine - we have discussed in depth iodine deficiency.  This is one mineral that can be very difficult to obtain naturally.  Tuna, Salmon, Iodized Salt, and root vegetables that have been grown in iodine rich soils are all good sources of iodine.  Iodine works primarily with your metabolism and thyroid, which is the reason that many people are misdiagnosed with Hypothyroidism instead of iodine deficiency.

Calcium - we all know about calcium and its benefits to bones, but there are more health benefits of calcium in our diet - heart health, proper weight management, fights cancer, and helps maintain a healthy alkaline level (cancer can't live in an alkaline environment).  Foods rich in calcium include salmon, tuna, spinach, broccoli, oranges, almonds, soybeans, and peas.  It is important to note that for proper absorption the proper compliment of magnesium must be taken, if it isn't taken naturally.

Zinc - Zinc's best known benefit is that it strengthens the immune system (healing, rebuilding cells, and skin), it also aids in the absorption of minerals and vitamins, also aids in healthy vision,  helps balance blood sugar, aids in proper weight management, and is anti-inflammatory.  Foods rich in zinc are oysters, wheat germ, veal liver, sesame flour / tahini, beef, pumpkin / squash / watermelon seeds, chocolate, lamb, and peanuts.

Vitamin B Complex - The entire group of B vitamins is very necessary for good mental health, strong immune system, healthy skin and muscles, promotes cell growth, and a wide variety of other benefits, much too long of a list to provide here.  Foods rich in vitamin B include liver, beef, turkey, brazil nuts, tuna, oats, avocados, legumes, and bananas.

Vitamin C - we all know that vitamin C helps fight colds and boosts our immune system, it also helps promote healthy skin and collagen, helps lower cholesterol, helps fight Arteriosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), and it helps keep us young! All of your fruits are a good source of vitamin C the best however, are

A Healthy Environment

Many ailments / allergies / diseases have environmental factors that need to be taken into account.  This post is part education and part alternatives for a healthy environment.

Let's start with the education.  There are many things in our homes / yards that can cause both allergies and weaken our immune system.  Things you may not even think about.  Carpet - have you ever smelled fresh carpet installed in a home?  Do you get a headache from it?  There are potentially harmful fumes that are given off by carpet of any age.  In addition, we are unable to get all the dirt, dust, dust mites, mold, mildew out of carpet which can potentially add to asthma / allergies.  Furniture - more and more we are seeing low or zero VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) for our furniture because of the types of materials our furniture is made from.  Paint - again we are seeing more and more low / zero VOC paints on the market.  Microwave - the energy waves that heat our food in a microwave changes the physical makeup of the food / water and potentially can be very damaging to our bodies.  In addition, those waves don't remain in the microwave - they are spread through the house.  It is recommended that you do NOT use a microwave for anything, including heating water.  Plastic containers for foods - plastic containers release harmful chemicals into our foods.  You should store all food in glass / ceramic containers.  Get rid of any plastic tableware (plates, glasses, silverware, serving dishes).  If you must use a microwave, make sure you do NOT put plastic in the microwave. Bedding - pillows / sheets / blankets / towels - all should be natural fibers.  Electronics - TV / Computer / Cell phone - these things all change the electromagnetic field in your home.  Opening windows helps to disperse the build up.  Make sure to turn things off completely when not in use.  Pay close attention to the THINGS in your home that can release potentially harmful fumes - not just at the beginning of it's life when you can smell it - but all through the life of the product.

In addition to the things in your home that can potentially be a factor are the things you use to clean your home.  If a chemical has a warning about toxic fumes - it should never be used in your home.  Those fumes do not disappear because you can't smell them - if you do not open your house regularly those chemicals build up in your home and can be very hazardous.  There are studies out there showing that most homes are more toxic inside than outside.  The things in our homes and the chemicals we use to clean our home are the reason for this high level of toxicity.

Now let's discuss options.  What can you do to create a more healthy environment...

Obviously, changing out furniture and carpeting can be a costly step.  We are going to start with some less expensive, and less difficult measures.  Just make sure that you pay attention to the VOC levels when making your next major purchase - or when you decide to renovate / move.  Next, we will discuss products you can purchase that are safe for you and your environment.

Natural Cleansers - there are a host of natural cleansers out there that you can purchase if you don't want to take the time to make your own.  Clorox, Windex, Greenworks are some of the most common.  Some you can find at the grocery store, Lowe's has a stock of them (oh yeah, I was surprised too), and obviously your natural food stores will have stock.

Natural Hair Care - I use Pureology products - they were created by someone who's friend had cancer and they wanted an all natural alternative.  iherb.com also has a host of different options as well.

Natural Beauty Care -  There aren't many out there that you can get at any grocery / drug store.  In another post we will discuss recipes and options. I use a natural oatmeal bar from the natural food store because my skin is quite oily and very sensitive.  The oatmeal soap actually balances my skin.

Now for a list of things that are far safer for you, less expensive, and more effective than the harsh chemicals we have become accustomed to using.

Vinegar - you should have JUGS of vinegar in your home!  There are so many uses for vinegar that will surprise you.  Vinegar can be used in place of anything bleach is used for.  Whitening laundry, wiping down counters, showers, killing mold, mildew, and fungus.  It also can be used as a toner for your face, and will help eliminate dandruff if you rinse your hair with vinegar after washing.  Vinegar has been long known to help normalize bile production and helps relieve acid reflux / ulcers.  Rinsing fresh produce in vinegar will help remove toxins / herbicides / pesticides.  Vinegar also soothes and heals burns and bug bites.

Colloidal Silver - I wrote a whole post on the nutritional value of Colloidal Silver but there are also several environmental benefits.  I have been told that if you add several tablespoons to your mop water, it will kill any little creepy crawlies that scuttle across your floor.  Also, use it in your cleaning water when cleaning your cabinets, silverware drawers for the same benefit.  It is also used to heal / relieve ear aches - a couple drops in each ear.  Colloidal Silver also helps heal sore throats by gargling twice a day with silver.

Baking Soda / Vinegar - Baking soda and vinegar help unclog drains, and clean silver.  For drains - pour about 1/3 c baking soda down the drain (after the water level has dropped below the drain) and then pour 1 c vinegar down the drain.  Pour another c vinegar if it still bubbles.  Wait 10 minutes and then pour a kettle of boiling water down the drain.  The more the better... you want to make sure that all the baking soda has been removed from the pipes.  For silver cleaning, use a bowl large enough to completely submerge your silver and have more than 1/2 left for "fizz."  fill with enough vinegar to cover the silver product and then slowly pour baking soda over until the fizzing stops.  Then take an old toothbrush and scrub.  You may have to repeat this process a couple times.

Salt and Baking Soda - Both have been used for centuries as an abrasive - both can be used to scrub stoves, caked on grunge on pots / pans / plates, ovens, mildew, mold, etc..

Tomatoes / Ketchup - can be used to clean copper and / or brass pans.

Rubbing Alcohol - Anyone have kids?  Kids that like to get into your permanent markers?  That like to draw on walls? carpet? etc???  Rubbing alcohol will remove those lovely drawings - make sure to take photos before you remove your little Picasso's creations.

Lemon Juice - lemon juice's acidic base helps dissolve soap scum and hard water stains.  Grind it up in the garbage disposal to get a clean fresh smell.  Mix with olive oil as a furniture polish.

Recommended Reading - additional natural solutions: http://www.doityourself.com/stry/cleaners

Outside / Yard / Garden - there are some very simple ways to remove many of the harmful chemicals from your outdoor space as well.

Garlic / Onion - Garlic and onion keep away a host of bugs - as they are natural pesticides.  Plant onions around your roses to keep away aphids.  Sprinkle a combination of garlic / onion granules on your yard to keep away mosquitoes.  I use http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000DN7OQW/ref=wms_ohs_product_C and they work for about three weeks.... I love having the birds around - and they feed off the mosquitoes - so how to keep them off the yard so I am not eaten alive?  These work great!

Eucalyptus / Lemongrass Oil - 32oz spray bottle, water filled to w/in 2" of top, 40 drops eucalyptus oil, 15 drops lemongrass oil.  Spray around your doors / windows outside to keep bugs from coming in the house.  Use in your laundry (final rinse) to do the same for your clothing / bedding.  Another natural pesticide.

Marigolds - these pungent flowers have been used for centuries to keep pests out of the garden.  Plant them throughout your garden to keep away pesky critters that want to enjoy your crops.

What's the Cause - 5?

So... we have discussed in four posts about the foods that affect illnesses... now we need to discuss other possibilities.  We have touched lightly on how thoughts affect your body, but we need to go a little deeper.

People with positive outlook on life live longer.
People that think in positive terms rather than negative have healthier bodies
People that think positively have far fewer debilitating illnesses / diseases
Positive people are far less likely to have a fatal disease

As we discussed previously, there are three pillars of Naturopathy - Diet, Exercise, and Mental Well Being.  One thing you may not like to hear - you will need to come to terms with - We cause our own illnesses with our thoughts.  OUCH!  I don't like the idea of me thinking myself sick.  How about you?  But this message has a positive one too - We can heal those illnesses with our thoughts.  Ok!  That is easier to take - but is it any easier to live?

We discussed Chakras in a previous post - and I gave one example from Dr. Christiane Northrup's book "The Wisdom of Menopause."  I was blown away when I realized that my issues with my relationships was the cause of my female reproductive organs... and that if I had dealt with those issues as a teen and early adult - I never would have had to have a hysterectomy.  I had caused all my pain and suffering by not listening to what my body was telling me... all those warning signs... I thought it was "just me."  Never once did I think that I was in control.

I am not going to give you the technical names of each Chakra - go out on line if you are interested to get more details - for our lesson, we don't need the formal names.  The Chakras are numbered 1 - 7 from base of spine to top of head.

7th Chakra (Crown) is the top most Chakra and can affect any organ in the body.  This Chakra's emotional connection is with things we can not control and things that must be accepted without a visual connection (God, life's purpose, the bigger picture).

6th Chakra (Third Eye) is between your eyes and affects the head (eyes, ears, nose, brain).  This Chakra's emotional connection is with perception, morality, and thoughts.

5th Chakra (Throat) sits at the base of your throat and affects that general area and also includes your mouth, neck vertebrae, and thyroid.  Communication, timing and will power are all connected with this Chakra.

4th Chakra (Heart) sits between your breasts and affects your organs in this general area as well as, upper esophagus, diaphragm, and your blood vessels.  This Chakra's emotional connection is with emotional expression and relationships.

3rd Chakra (Plexis) sits in the center of your chest and affects your abdomen, upper intestines, liver, gall bladder, lower esophagus, stomach, kidney, pancreas, adrenal glands, spleen, and middle spine.  Self-esteem, personal power, responsibilities, addictions, and a need for power and success are all related to this Chakra.

2nd Chakra (Sacral) sits in the lower abdomen basically where a woman's uterus sits and affects all male / female sex organs, large intestine, lower vertebrae, pelvis, appendix, and bladder.  Personal power, limitations / boundaries in relationships, independence, creativity, money, power, sex, and personal responsibilities in relationships are all related to this Chakra.

1st Chakra (Root) sits at the base of the spine and affects all muscles and bones, the spine, blood and immune system.  Safety / Security, trust, fear, independence are all related to this Chakra.

Take a look at your life and your chronic or repetitive ailments - where do they fall?  Do you have any of the emotional baggage that contributes to that illness?  Take them seriously and resolve your issues.

Let's take a positive step towards a longer HEALTHIER life together!!

What's the Cause - 4?

Installment number four....

Fibromyalgia - from all the research on line, they have no idea what causes it... but that it is becoming one of the most common conditions.  Inflammation, nerves, muscles.  Remember our discussion on what happens to toxins when we are not properly hydrated?  Those toxins get stuck in the muscles and will cause a variety of issues, including the possibility of fibromyalgia. A diet in foods that are anti-inflammatory, and that strengthen the immune system are recommended.

Recommended Reading - http://www.holisticonline.com/remedies/cfs/fib_alt_med.htm

High Blood Pressure - high salt and fatty food diets are known for their cause of hypertension.  People that are overweight, do not exercise enough, drink excessively, and smoke are all prime candidates for high blood pressure concerns.  So, obviously a change in lifestyle and diet will make a huge difference.  Not everything can be accomplished in one day - so take it a step at a time.  For some people diabetes, adrenal, and / or thyroid problems will also increase blood pressure, as will some medications.

Foods / Herbs for hypertension include garlic, hawthorne, omegas (3/6/9), calcium, magnesium, potassium, plenty of fruits, vegetables, nuts, and grains/seeds.  Reduce the amount of fried, fatty, sugary foods in your diet.

Recommended Reading - http://altmedicine.about.com/cs/herbsvitaminsek/a/Hypertension.htm

High Cholesterol - There have been loads of studies for high cholesterol and there are plenty of websites out there that will help you naturally manage your high cholesterol.  Primarily - be very careful in the foods you eat - and exercise, exercise, exercise!

Certain foods help keep your body alkaline and help maintain good cholesterol numbers - you might be surprised at several of them... almonds, walnuts, oatmeal, blueberries, salmon / tuna, red wine, soy, extra virgin olive oil, cayenne, green tea, apples, shitake mushrooms, artichoke, garlic, avocado, and dark green leafy vegetables.  And again, if there is a list of what you should eat... there is also a list of what to stay away from: fast food, fried food, processed foods, junk food, dairy, tropical oils, and sweets / baked treats.  You also have herbs that help - fenugreek, cayenne, garlic, hawthorne berries, flax seed, and ginger.

Since LDL is broken down in the liver, good liver health is necessary... which means lowering alcohol and caffeine intake and increasing the intake of foods high in B complex vitamins, magnesium, vitamin C, vitamin E, zinc, and iron.  Green leafy vegetables, broccoli, organic fruit juices, nuts, seeds, legumes, cabbage, cauliflower, kale, and brussles sprouts.

Diabetes - There are many contributing factors for diabetes including hypertension, sedentary lifestyle, poor diet, obesity, certain medications, smoking, high stress lifestyle and certain illnesses.  Certain illnesses (hypothyroidism / iodine deficiency) can lead to diabetes if not treated in time.

Super foods for diabetes include asparagus, blueberries, grapefruit, beans, broccoli, carrots, fish, flaxseed, cranberries, apples, melon, nuts, oatmeal, red onions, raspberries, spinach, soy, green tea, tomatoes, and Greek yogurt.

What's the Cause - 3?

Installment number three... this group is of the more serious diseases.  Remember, your body starts out with little warning signs - getting a cold, a headache, upset stomach, headaches, chronic illness is next... and it continues to escalate if you don't pay attention to the warning signs being given.  We all have the ability to resolve the issues at hand and make our life a healthy one.

Heart Disease - There are many other ailments that contribute to heart disease - diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol.  Smoking, drinking, and other self destroying lifestyles also play a big part.  How you handle stress, how often you eat our "standard" list of bad foods, how often you exercise make a difference as well.

Foods that will help heal as well as prevent heart disease include fresh fruit and vegetables that are high in antioxidants - dark green leafy vegetables, orange fruits & vegetables, onions, garlic. Other foods to consider lean meat, olive oil (instead of other kinds), whole grains, tuna, salmon, nuts and seeds.

Foods to completely remove from the diet include fatty meats, processed meats with nitrates (bologna, deli meat, sausage, and hot dogs), processed white sugar / flour, ice cream, fried foods, junk food, salt, and crackers.

Recommended reading: http://health.howstuffworks.com/wellness/natural-medicine/alternative/alternative-medicines-for-heart-disease.htm

Cancer - It is hard to pinpoint one thing that causes cancer since there are so many different types.  As in all things involved with Naturopathy - there are three things required - good mental health, good diet, and plenty of exercise.  Eating a well balanced diet high in leafy green vegetables and dark fruits, plenty of sunshine, exercise 30 minutes a day at least five days a week - if you are groaning with that idea - start slow, walking, biking, and grow to at least 30 minutes 3 - 4 days a week of cardio.

Certain foods are very well known for destroying cancer cells - asparagus, avocado, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, chili peppers, figs, flax seed, garlic, grapefruit, grapes, kale, licorice root, and carrots. Green tea has also been known to have cancer fighting capabilities.  Cancer weakens the immune system and so foods that strengthen the immune system also should be considered daily - foods high in antioxidants, vitamin C, vitamin B complex, vitamin E.

Mentally, one must believe they can be healed, that their change of diet, exercise and mental attitude will help heal their body.

Alzheimer's - Studies are showing that Alzheimer's disease is characterized by deposits of protein in and between nerves.  This again leads us to believe that dehydration plays a part in the cause of this debilitating disease.  There are also links to lifestyle and Alzheimer's - alcohol consumption, smoking, not getting enough sleep, and not getting enough mental stimulation.  Many of the same factors that cause heart disease, diabetes, and cancer are the same for Alzheimer's, as are the lifestyle changes needed.

Foods that are a must to fight Alzheimer's are the same ones that build strong nerve cells, strong immune system, and good mental health.  Vitamin B12 (snapper, tofu, venison, liver, sea plants, and miso) helps regenerate / strengthen nerve cells.  Vitamins B Complex, C, and E help build a strong immune system.  Ginkgo Biloba, Omega 3/6/9, Vitamin B Complex, along with plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables all work for brain power.

Tumors - these can be cancerous or non-cancerous in nature.  Since cancer has been addressed above, we will be focusing on non-cancerous (benign).  Like with cancer, there can be many many different reasons.  Take into consideration the type of tumor it  is.
Get more dark green vegetables into your system.  They also help reduce tumors of all kinds.  Especially Asparagus, Broccoli, and Spinach.  Build up your immune system – this is a MUST.  With any type of illness – especially tumors and long lasting illnesses your immune system has been weakened.  Vitamins C and B complex are essential to build that back up.  I would recommend 1 – 2 Emergen-C packets a day.  Before lunch.    In addition these foods/vitamins/herbs will help boost your immune system: any of your orange vegetables and fruits (rich in beta carotene), Crab, beans, turkey (all rich in Zinc), Apples, raisins, berries, plums, red grapes, onions (all rich in Vitamin E), garlic – get this in a gelcap if you don’t like garlic or don’t get much of it in your diet it is essential for a healthy immune system, Omega 3/9 – these are your fish oil and borage oils – both good oils that are vitally important to your body, turmeric – this can be found in mustard and curry and has been found to block bad cells from growing and multiplying, oregano – I am sure you are familiar with it – it has been found to fight bacteria and is an antimicrobial, ginger – is a warming herb and helps to energize the body, and green tea – there are more and more studies showing the health benefits of 2 – 3 cups of green tea a day – if you like the taste of Chai you also get the benefits of cinnamon, cloves, ginger and a host of other herbs – just make sure you get the GREEN TEA version.

Just as there are good foods for your immune system there are also damaging foods – the number one food is sugar – especially white processed sugar.  Instead use honey that is a natural antibiotic.  Excessive fat in your foods – processed foods, fast food, fried foods – all are terrible for your immune system.  Excessive alcohol too damages your immune system as it produces chemicals in the body that destroy good cells.  There are several herbal treatments as well… just remember with herbs – understand the pros and cons of each herb before taking it, and always start with a low dose and slowly increase.  Since your body’s immune system has been severely weakened, it is necessary to remove any toxins in your diet – artificial sweeteners, processed foods, fast foods, junk foods, sodas – stick to as holistic a diet as you can.  You also need to “clean” your environment as much as you can.  This means not only a deep clean of your home, but opening the windows – using NATURAL cleaners rather than harsh chemicals – these chemicals do not go away but stay in your air.  Most homes are more toxic inside than outside because we don’t open up the house and air it out.  You should air out your home at least once a month, no matter what the season.

What's the Cause - 2?

Installment number two...

Migraines / Headaches - more and more people are being diagnosed with migraines  and from what I have read, there is very little understanding as to the why.  I never had migraines until after I had two major surgeries in one year, now I have them regularly.  I believe the combination of being put under for surgery and the change in my hormones caused a shift in my body chemistry, the result being migraines.  Many women going through menopause have stated that they get migraines.  Migraines also come from caffeine, tumors, food allergies, environmental allergies / stimulants, anxiety, skipping meals / dieting / fasting, foods containing nitrates (processed meats), tyramine (red wine, aged cheeses, smoked fish, chicken livers, some beans, and figs, and MSG (processed foods / some Chinese foods / some restaurant foods), chocolate, nuts, peanut butter, avocado, banana, citrus, onions, dairy products, and fermented or pickled foods also can be "triggers" for migraines.

Since we have a hard time pinning down exactly what causes migraines - it is hard to provide foods that will help - instead the foods / herbs listed are more to reduce swelling, and to promote healthy brain functions, and healthy blood functions.  Peppermint oil rubbed on the temples and base of the skull has been proven to help migraines.  Increase your intake of the Omegas 3/6/9, and ginkgo biloba - I take daily in pill form as I don't get enough of either in my food intake.  The B complex vitamins focus on the brain as well as overall immune health - I highly recommend that if you choose to increase your B vitamin intake you read up (you can overdose) and you take it in the morning - or you may have problems sleeping.  A strong shot of caffeine also can help with a fast onset of a severe migraine as it opens up the blood vessels and allows for better blood flow. The herb feverfew is the most common herb used for migraines.

Honestly, I have yet to find a 100% effective natural solution for my migraines, and one of the few pharmaceutical drugs I do keep on hand is Excedrin Migraine.  It works for me, especially when combined with the other - Claritin.  I know that my migraine triggers primarily fall into one of three categories - high stress, allergies (environmental / seasonal), and high energy levels / absorbing negative energy from others.  You would be well advised to understand when and why you have your migraines to help avoid and treat them better.

Also, cell phones are very dangerous when put next to the ear to talk to someone.  Read up on cell phone tumors and the dangers of cell phone usage.

ADD / ADHD - When I was a child there was no ADD / ADHD, but then again there was very little fast food, junk food, processed food at that time either.  Nor were there so many chemicals / preservatives / artificial colors / artificial flavors either.  Taking a serious look at your diet may shed light on your / your child's hyperactivity.  Processed Sugar / flour, sodas, artificial sweeteners, junk food, fast food, and processed frozen foods all play a huge part in these diseases.  These foods disrupt the natural flow in the brain.  Changing the diet and including some herbs helps substantially - Omega 3/6/9, ginkgo biloba, B complex vitamins all are important for a healthy brain.

Acne - Acne in children / tweens / adults can be fairly normal.  It is a warning sign that there is an imbalance somewhere, that you touch your face too often (especially with dirty hands), and / or that your skin is naturally oily (which is horrible as a child / but great as an adult as it keeps your skin supple and younger looking longer).  In children it is far more likely to be a dietary issue.  Too many of our "standard" bad foods in the diet, not enough exercise, and not enough sunshine.  In tweens it is more likely to be hormone imbalance as the onset of puberty progresses - and can be again modified and some what controlled by diet.  A good skin regiment, and proper hygiene is also required.  As an adult, diet, certain medications, dehydration, food allergies, stress, anxiety, cheap cosmetics, allergic reaction to skin products, hormone changes (peri- and menopause / male menopause), and birth control pills can be contributing factors.

You should clean your face at least twice a day with both an astringent and a toner and follow with a moisturizer (yes, even those of you that have oily skin).  Make sure you choose products that are good quality and that fall low on the ladder of chemicals and high on the ladder of hypoallergenic.  I have very sensitive skin and only use Neutrogena products on my skin if I purchase a product.  Witch Hazel and Vinegar are great for cleaning your skin.  Oatmeal soap also a wonderful moisturizing / toning product.  Astringents and toners will remove oil and dirt and "tone" the skin, while the proper moisturizer puts the proper moisture back into your skin.  If you wear makeup - put it on right before you go out, and take it off as soon as you are in for the night.  Make sure you purchase good quality products.  Try not to touch your face too often and if you have a hard time with this directive, you will need to clean your face more often.  A good part of the reason adults have acne is related to touching their face with dirty hands.  Wash your hands as frequently as possible.

Water plays a big part in acne as well,  Remember that water removes the toxins from your body - if you are not drinking enough, the toxins go to the muscles and also through the skin.  Drinking enough water every day is critical to removing the toxins properly.  Green tea, dark green leafy vegetables, apples, pears, broccoli, and avocados all help.  Vitamins C, B Complex, and Vitamin E all work to promote a healthy skin.  Our "standards" again should be avoided.

Arthritis - Arthritis, joint pain and a host of other similar diseases have two very important things in common - Water and Omegas.  I am beginning to sound like a broken record - but water again removes toxins from the body.  Think of a clear glass of water sitting in a window - what happens after several days of sitting in the sun?  The water evaporates, right?  But what is left behind?  Mineral deposits.  If your body is chronically dehydrated those minerals must go somewhere - and they tend to gather in joints.  Your Omegas (3/6/9) help lubricate your joints.  Not having enough in your body causes stiffness, and stress on your joints just like having a wheel improperly lubricated on a bike or a car - does it run properly?  No.  The same principle applies.  Immune system weakness also allows for infection and other possible causes.

Drinking sufficient water (see post on water), get enough of your Omegas (I recommend a gelcap including all three 3/6/9), and eat foods that reduce inflammation and promote a healthy immune system.  Those include dark green leafy vegetables, fruits / vegetables high in vitamins C, B, and E.  Anti-inflammatory foods include kelp, wild salmon, turmeric, shitake mushrooms, green tea, papaya, blueberries, olive oil, broccoli, and sweet potato.  And of course - stay away from our "standard" bad food list.

What's the Cause - 1?

Lots of people have symptoms and don't know what potentially can be the cause, nor how to naturally treat the problem....

Hair Loss - The most common reason for hair loss is stress.  If you are in a very stressful situation, you will likely have hair loss - the hair loss will continue for up to six months after the situation has been resolved.  Another reason for hair loss is iodine deficiency (discussed in another post).  Other reasons for hair loss include poor nutrition, hormone imbalance, some medications, major surgery, having a baby, diabetes, lupus, hypothyroidism, and fungal infections of the skin.

If you have checked for any of the diseases listed above and don't fall into that category, here are some things that will help with hair growth.  Hair is made up of protein and amino acid chains.  I can remember as a child my mother telling me to brush my hair 100 strokes every night.  The brush massages the scalp and pulls the natural oils from the scalp down the shaft to moisturize each follicle.  I am told by the lady that cuts my hair to only wash my hair every other day (short / medium length).  When it was long she told me to wash it every third day.  Shampoos and conditioners (even holistic ones) will strip your hair of the natural oils needed to keep your hair strong.  Once it gets brittle and dry, it breaks. Check the shampoo and conditioner you are using.  Your skin is the largest organ in your body - it is the first to be hit with outside toxins.  Artificial colors and chemicals can not only cause your hair to be brittle, but can also cause additional issues like cancer.
Foods that help fight hair loss are rich in protein, silica, iron, pectin, and vitamin E.  Protein sources are not only meats but also include dark green leafy vegetables, sea vegetables, beans, and nuts.  Silica can be found in grains.  Vitamin E in avocados, nuts, seeds, and olive oil.  And Pectin in your fruits with an edible skin - apples, cherries, grapes.  Gelatin also helps (Jello) as it is made from crushed bones.  Vitamin C should also be raised in your diet as it helps build collagen and aids in a healthy immune system.

Foods that can cause hair loss include excessive vitamin A, and all those things I keep harping about to quit eating - sugar, fast food, junk food, high fat content, fried foods etc... In addition, dairy products, a raw foods diet, citrus fruit, and tomatoes also can cause hair loss.

This is a great link that explains additional reasons and ideas when faced with hair loss http://www.holisticonline.com/remedies/hair/hair_loss-diet.htm

Insomnia - I am sure we have all suffered from insomnia at least once in our lives.  The most common reasons for it are anxiety, stress, excessive caffeine, menopause, and depression.  Other factors include iodine deficiency, hypothyroidism, hormone imbalance, too much light, medications, mental illness, irregular sleep patterns, and alcohol.

Chronic insomnia can be very unhealthy for the body and your mental well being.  The first things to change are your diet patterns, you should eat nothing the last 2 - 3 hours of the day and drink only water after dinner.  You should change your light /sound patterns.  Light triggers chemicals in the brain that tells us that it is time to be awake.  2 - 3 hours before your normal bedtime start turning down lights and sounds in the house.  If you are not in a room, make sure the light is off, turn on the lowest possible wattage light, if necessary in the room you are occupying at the furthest distance from where you are.  Turn down the music or the TV to a lower level, this also changes your brain activity and makes you concentrate more to hear what is being said or sung.  Don't sleep with the TV on (I know, this can be a difficult transition - to wean yourself, turn down the volume more and more each night; once all the way down, turn off the TV and turn on a nightlight in the room - then move it out of the room but where it still lights the room - then off) soft instrumental music is better than TV if you need noise.  Read your medications - some side effects are insomnia - can you do without them?  are there any other alternatives?  Only go to bed when you are READY for sleep.  Don't lay in bed if you are unable to sleep.  Get up and go for a short walk (please be safe), read a book, listen to soft music.  or write in a journal.  Stress and anxiety are the most common reasons for the inability to sleep.  You must work out these things - unwind from your day in order to sleep well.  Turn down the temperature in your sleeping area, most people sleep better when cooler.  If you are heating your home, shut off the bedroom and close the vents part way.  In the summer months, use a fan to cool you.

Foods / herbs that help relax you and calm the mind include peppermint (tea and oil), Chamomile tea.  Rice, oats, barley, ginger, and bananas help promote melatonin.  Soy nuts / beans, lean animal protein, nuts, and seeds all contain tryptophan that is a sleep invoking chemical in the brain.  Both dill and basil also help calm the brain.

Foods to stay away from, again are our "standards" - fast food, processed white sugar / flour, frozen prepared foods, junk food, fried foods, anything with a high fat content, sodas and any artificial sweeteners.

Bad Breath - Obviously our dental hygiene is the MOST common reason for bad breath, so we won't touch this one.  Additional reasons for bad breath include cancer, diabetes, liver failure, acid reflux, certain medications, ear / nose / throat illnesses, dry mouth, dehydration, certain foods, smoking, and alcohol.

The first recommendation (beyond making sure you brush and floss daily and visit your dentist annually) is to drink more water.  Water helps remove toxins in the body and will help remove the bacteria in your mouth.  Certain foods (like garlic) cause bad breath, remember to brush after eating these wonderful foods to reduce bad breath. Cinnamon and mint aids in removing bad breath as well as killing the bacteria.  If you have "dry mouth" and you are drinking sufficient amounts of water daily these herbs will help stimulate your saliva which is necessary for good dental hygiene - Coriander / cilantro, spearmint, tarragon, eucalyptus, rosemary and cardamom.  Greek yogurt (not the pudding yogurt that we Americans are used to) and its live cultures will help fight bacteria.  Eat fresh produce that requires a good amount of chewing - celery and apples are good choices - they naturally rub against the gums and in between the teeth to remove bacteria.
Body Odor - Again, there are very common reasons for body odor - hormone changes in tweens and not using deodorant being the two most common.  But body odor can be a sign to more serious issues.  The body has several ways to remove toxins from the body - sweating is one of them.  The body is trying to tell you there is a problem - infection / disease / imbalance - somewhere.  Dehydration is one cause - when there isn't sufficient water in the body to remove toxins they will be stored in the muscles of the body and attach to certain fat cells.  When the body then is stressed - as in exercise - those toxins are released back into the body.  Other causes can include diabetes, UTI, infection, some medications, cancer, liver / kidney / bladder / gastrointestinal imbalances, stress, hypoglycemia, hypothyroidism, and a host of others.  It is important that you determine which is the problem and correct it.  Most all causes have other symptoms, which combined will point you in the right direction.

A couple suggestions - ensure you are drinking enough water, change your clothing choices - look for things that are made from natural fibers that allow air and moisture to pass through, stay away from our "standards" list of bad food choices, eat more leafy green vegetables and combine it with a walk in the sun to activate the vitamin D, get more magnesium and zinc in your diet which helps to balance your metabolism.  This is the most important thing to remember about body odor -  what comes out of your body reflects what you put in.

Energy of Life

There are a many pieces to Natural Medicine.  We have the shamans of the world - Tibetans, Ayurvedas, Indians of North America, and the Mayans of South America are just a few... These shaman have passed down ancient beliefs from generation to generation.  We have many pieces that interconnect - Acupuncture, Reflexology, Acupressure, Aromatherapy, Chiropractic Medicine, Meridians, Herbology, Chakras, Energy Medicine among others.

I am just a beginning student of the various wise tribes of the world, and am very interested in learning more.  If you have any links or info to pass along, I would be very happy to hear from you!

There is much known about many of the pieces - but I am most intrigued by Energy Medicine.  If you have never heard of it, you may have a hard time believing in its capabilities - please take the time to test out a couple of the practices before you pass judgement.  I believe that we each have "gifts" that make us unique... we can ignore those gifts, or we can embrace them and help strengthen them.

The lady behind Energy Medicine is Donna Eden.  As a child she was allergic to everything but sugar and meat and had tuberculosis.  She was diagnosed with MS in her early 20s and then had a heart attack before she was 30.  She had asthma and was also hypoglycemic.  In short, she was a mess.  Donna's "gift" was the ability to SEE energy.  Yes, physically see energy waves.  She was able to move energy and repair meridians - heal physical and mental ailments by moving the energy around people.

We are all made up of pure energy.  Some can see the energy, some can feel it, others can hear it.  I am sure others can taste it.  Some have the ability to absorb energy, some can give energy.  Understanding that we are energy - that energy flows through our body via the meridians - and that we can heal by realigning the energy flowing through our bodies is quite important.

To understand this principal, we need to understand Chakras and Meridians.  I am going to give very simplistic descriptions here - and point you in the direction for more in depth knowledge.  If there is anyone interested, I will happily go into more depth in another post.

Chakras - this comes from Sanskrit and describes the seven energy centers of the body.  Each Chakra relates to both an emotional and a physical part of the body.  For example, the fourth Chakra affects the Heart, Lungs, Blood vessels, Shoulders, Ribs, Breasts, Diaphragm, and the Upper Esophagus.  And the emotional issues related are emotional expression, the capacity to feel fully, express joy and love, resolve anger, hostility and grief, experience forgiveness, relationships, capacity to from mutually reciprocal partnerships with balance of nurturing vs. nurturing of others, intimacy with others vs. capacity to be alone.  What this means is that if you have issues with any of these organs - it relates directly back to these emotional issues.  Resolve the issues, and you will alleviate the organ related issues.  This takes us back to our MENTAL WELL BEING.  This example is found in Dr. Christiane Northrup's book "The Wisdom of Menopause," and she does a great job of explaining the chakras and how they relate back to our organs.

Meridians - these are energy pathways that move from our extremities to our organs.  If we have broken pathways - it is just like having a highway under construction with no detour.  If the proper energy flow can not get to our organs, we fall into ill health.  There are fourteen meridian pathways.  You can find diagrams of these in Donna Eden's Book, "Energy Medicine."

Sit in a quiet place - make sure you are comfortable, and won't be interrupted or disturbed.  Relax completely and open your mind.  Think of each Chakra - put chakra into a search engine and you will be able to visually see all seven - you should feel strongly about one more than the others.  Picture the chakra as a flower bud and envision it opening.  The center is bright with energy.  Let that energy flow out to your hands.  Your hands should get warm.  Slowly run your hands (without touching) up and down your body.  Do you feel hot spots?  Do you have a spot that hurts?  Concentrate your energy in that area.  Does your skin get warm there?  It may take several attempts to open up enough to be able to feel this.

Energy flows through all of us - and every living thing.  In her book she teaches you how to "energy test" for many things, the food allergy one was quite amazing to me.  In seconds you can tell if you will have a reaction to any food you pick up and hold in your hand.  I have tried this and was quite amazed by the results.  I highly recommend both books for anyone serious about Naturopathy.

Eating in Season

Have you ever thought about why different foods grow at different times of the year?  Peas, lima beans, tomatoes - spring; corn, summer squash grapes - summer; squash, pumpkins, apples - fall.  We have seasons so that we have a variety of foods to eat, but also so that we get the proper nutrients for each season.  Most Naturopathic practitioners will recommend eating in season.

Why?  There are many heath benefits.  Obviously... you knew I was going to say that right??  Let's hit some of the more obvious, first.

1. Save money - foods that are in season costs less.  They are readily available locally
2. They are picked at the height of freshness - and will have many more nutrients than those products shipped from a long distance.
3. You are buying locally - better for your community.
4. Fresh vs. Dried - obviously fresh will have more nutrients than dried / canned / frozen.
5. TASTE - There is SUCH a huge difference here.  Two short stories for you - I lived in both Hawaii and Japan for several years where pineapple is grown.  To this day I can not eat pineapple unless it is FRESH - I can taste the tin in the canned stuff, and the ones from the store are bland.  And when I cooked for my future husband for the first time I made home made chili and peas (I have no idea why I chose peas as a side for chili - but I did).  He asked me what the little round green things were.  And told me they couldn't be peas - because they were supposed to be olive green, not bright green.  He had only had them from a can, and couldn't believe the difference.

Now, beyond the obvious points above there are some nutritional reasons to eat in season.  Your body changes throughout the year and needs a boost of different types of foods.  In the spring as the world and our bodies are coming out of the "resting" phase of the year - it needs a boost of energy that all your fresh tender shoots, herbs, berries provide.  These foods help energize your body and help remove the toxins that have built up over the winter, and help reduce the "padding" accumulated with the warm winter foods.  In the summer you have strength building, sun loving foods - these will help strengthen your body and give your body the lift that sunshine can offer.  In the fall, the foods are "warming" and prepare your body for winter - squash, grains, nuts.  And in the winter, again more "warming" foods that store for long periods of times - dried beans, legumes, grains, nuts, squash... these add your "padding" but also provide your body with what is needed for cold weather.  To help you stay well, and warm.

Seasonal eating will also help your mood and your energy levels.  Foods that need sunshine to gain their full benefit are eaten in the spring and summer, while foods that don't need as much are eaten in the fall and winter.  Obviously, the warmer your climate the longer you eat the spring and summer foods.  Eating in season also provides your body with a wide variety of foods - we get used to eating the same foods over and over again - and many times don't get the full spectrum of required nutrients, nor get rid of the buildup of toxins in our body.  We need to eat foods of every color, and in every season for optimal health.

Diet Food Poison

This post is primarily focused on Aspartame or as you may better know NutraSweet, Equal, NatraTaste, and Canderel.  We are lead to believe that diet food and diet soda will reduce the likelihood of gaining weight.  Untrue.  Foods labeled "diet" or "lite" are more poison to our body than not.

There are nearly 100 serious side effects of Aspartame Disease that fall in a variety of different categories.  I am going to provide several links for those of you that want to get more information beyond what I am providing.

Concerns regarding Aspartame:
1. Artificial Sweeteners are very addictive.  They cause major withdrawals and can take several months to get out of your body.
2. Artificial Sweeteners actually make you gain weight rather than lose it.
3. Artificial Sweeteners have been linked directly to cancer, Alzheimer-like symptoms, MS-like symptoms, stroke, lupus, and death
4. There are many that believe that Artificial Sweeteners turn into formaldehyde in high temperatures.

When I was part of the military family and stationed in Maryland, my husband was sent to Saudi Arabia with many others.  Coke and Pepsi was sent over FREE for the military and sat under tents in the hot Arabian sun.  Many of these men came home sick - hair falling out, memory loss, tremors, depression, seizures, and a variety of other ailments that could not be diagnosed as any one disease.  Some of the men died of their ailments.  Many attributed the diet sodas and aspartame disease to their ailments.

I also know several people that have had Alzheimer-like symptoms or MS-like symptoms.  When they removed diet sodas and diet foods from their diet (30 - 60 days), they began to lose the symptoms.  Not all of the side effects of Aspartame are temporary and should be taken very seriously.

SUPER foods - Herbs / Spices

The best way to a healthier you... is to add a little "spice" to your meals.  Get creative with what herbs and spices you add to your meals.  It doesn't have to be complicated or hard... my favorite use... add as many fresh herbs as I can find to my salad... mmmm... a little balsamic vinegar.

http://www.herbcompanion.com/ is a great site.  Lots of good info.  Recipes - how to grow herbs - where to find organic farms in your area.
http://www.whfoods.com/ is another great site for information.

Mint - Peppermint has the highest concentration of menthol of any in the mint family.  It is commonly used to settle stomach indigestion, soothes nausea, protects the body against the formation of cancer cells, cleanses the body, and clears congestion.  Peppermint oil is known to aid in relieving the pain of a migraine by rubbing a drop of oil on the temples and at the base of the neck.  Boiling water and adding both peppermint oil and eucalyptus oil and breathing in the vapor helps to relieve congestion (both sinus and chest) and helps to heal lung infections.

Ginger - We use the tuber root / rhizome of the beautiful tropical ginger plant.  The Asians have used ginger for thousands of years as a healing herb.  When taken internally, it helps prevent motion sickness, reduces morning sickness during pregnancy, reduces inflammation and the effects of arthritis, fights colon cancer, and fights tumors.  When used in the bath it is an anti-inflammatory, a stress reliever, and helps reduce the affects of cold/flu.
Turmeric - Turmeric is an active ingredient in mustard and curry.  It has a very distinctive taste and color.  Turmeric is known for it's great anti-inflammatory characteristics and for its relief for arthritic joints.  It is a powerful antioxidant that helps prevent cataracts, colon cancer and Alzheimer’s disease.

Dill - I absolutely love fresh dill in my salads.  I grow it in my garden, because I eat so much of it... it gets too expensive! :)  Dill helps with digestion, has cancer fighting properties, helps regulate menstrual cycle, fights insomnia, and promotes good oral hygiene.

Thyme - I was surprised to find how many health benefits Thyme has.  Thyme when drank as a tea (fresh thyme, honey, lemon) has a variety of benefits - expels parasites, soothes and relaxes the mind and eases sleep, eases menstrual cramps and the effects of PMS.  Insects do not like thyme so plant some in your garden or around your favorite roses to deter them.  Thyme increases brain function and cell regeneration.  There are too many benefits to list here.  Thyme can be used fresh, dried, as a tincture, and as an essential oil.  It can be used to aid in healing almost any ailment.

Cinnamon - my favorite spice is also my favorite scent.  The most common benefits of cinnamon is a healthy heart and lower cholesterol. Just 1/2 t. of cinnamon has been known to reduce the LDL and triglycerides.  It has also been shown to reduce blood sugar levels.  There are also studies showing that cinnamon helps fight cancer.  Specifically slowing the growth of leukemia and lymphoma cancer cells.  It helps clear sinuses and reduce coughing.  Cinnamon reduces nervous tension and increases alertness, memory, and concentration.  Many women use it to ease menstrual pain and cramping.  Cinnamon aids in digestion, reduces urinary infections, and boosts immune system functions.

Garlic - one of the oldest medicinal herbs known, many consider it a wonder drug because of its many benefits.  There are so many benefits I can't name them all here... Garlic is a natural mosquito repellent.  It helps normalize cholesterol levels, strengthens the natural ability for the body heal itself, fights cancer, strengthens the body against allergies, helps regulate blood pressure, helps the body maintain a healthy weight, helps fight strokes, and promotes a healthy heart.

Hot Peppers - spicy food has long been known to aid in heart health, breaks up congestion, and as an analgesic (pain killer).  It also helps reduces the symptoms of Asthma, fights free radicals that cause cancer, boosts immunity, helps one maintain a healthy weight, and fights ulcers.

Aloe Vera - aloe has long been known to help heal skin rashes, burns, and other skin ailments.  It also has been shown to regenerate skin cells.  An anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and immune stimulant herb with wonderful benefits.

This is only a start... every herb and spice out there has some healthy benefit... the more herbs you use in your food - the less salt you need.- obviously your heart will than you there!  Try using one of the many Mrs. Dash products more and salt less... I know!  this is a work in progress.. we take baby steps!  Just giving you some great alternatives.  :)

Time to Make a Change!

We have discussed a variety of "warning signs" that our bodies flash at us to get us to make changes.  I hope you have begun to see how different foods really affect your body.  Eating the right foods makes a HUGE difference in your day to day life.

It isn't all about eating food to manage your symptoms... it is about changing your attitude about food... about your life.. about exercise... In the United States we have been conditioned to allopatic medicine - you get sick, you go to the doctor.  Naturopathic medicine is a completely different mindset... it is feeding your body good things so that it (your body) can heal itself... and listening to the "warning signs" your body gives you ... and get better at reading the little ones before they get to be blaring ones!

That old adage, "you are what you eat," is so very true.  How you feed your body directly relates back to how healthy your life will be.  Feed your body good healthy fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts... and it will reward you by being stronger.  Your mind will reward you with being more positive, remembering more things, being faster, and learning new things.  Your organs will be less susceptible to disease.  In short, you will have a longer, more productive, healthier life.

So, I challenge you - this week when you go get groceries, spend a little more time in the produce department.  Find something new - different than you have ever tried - or something you have always wanted to try, but have never taken that step.  Ask the grocer how to know when it is ripe and how to serve.  Go on line and find a recipe.  And experiment.

Next - GET OUTSIDE!  Go for a walk.  Listen to the trees, birds, rivers, kids.... sit on a hill and just be!  Your body needs sunshine... we will start for just one day a week... eventually you will need to try to get 30 minutes every day.

And lastly - I know I am asking a lot.  We will start again with once a week.. and build to every morning... go out and find a quote that is motivational, work to change one negative into a positive, say hi and smile at a stranger... do something to make one person's day better.

Here's to a new healthier, happier you!

Colloidal Silver

One of the best healers to have in your medicine cabinet is Colloidal Silver.  Colloidal Silver is a natural antibiotic and heals both internal and external maladies.  In my research, I always seem to go back to - what did they do before pharmaceutical companies took over and began creating pills for us to take for every little thing?

Using pharmaceutical drugs causes several issues.  First, the concentration of these chemicals has a negative affect to other organs while it "cures" one ailment.  Over a long period of use, the body becomes resistant to these chemicals, and requires stronger and stronger chemicals to "heal."  These chemicals affect ALL parts of the body... and are part of the reason that we continue to have more and more health issues - cancer, ADHD, Alzheimer's, MS, heart disease, etc..

The term "colloidal" means particles suspended in fluid.  Colloidal Silver is actually quite simple to make - there are plenty of sites out there that will sell the required equipment.  Here is one http://www.elixa.com/silver/lindmn.htm.  The use of Colloidal Silver as a healing agent goes back thousands of years.  Persians were the first known users of Colloidal Silver.  When the first settlers arrive in America they would put silver coins in milk to help keep it fresher longer.

The term "blue blood" actually comes from excessive use of silver.  Royalty and Upper Classes ate on silver plates, drank from silver goblets, used silver flatware, served food in silver dishes - and the long term excessive amount of silver ingested literally turned their skin blue or silver.

Colloidal Silver has been put to the test many times and shown to be beneficial in healing / destroying the following ailments:

  • E. coli

  • Pink eye

  • colds

  • ear infections

  • bronchial infections

  • flu

  • athlete's foot

  • urinary tract infections

  • fungal infections

  • wound infections

  • strep

  • Anthrax

  • staph

  • typhoid

  • Additional uses: Add to water when you are worried that you may not have clean water.  Add to milk to lengthen the shelf life. Rinse your fruits and vegetables to increase shelf life.  Gargle with Colloidal Silver to help heal throat infections.  Put a couple drops in your ears to help heal ear infections and remove the pain.  Swish in your mouth to deaden the pain of a toothache.

Uses around the house:  I read recently that if you damp mop your floors with Colloidal Silver and water, it will kill any cockroaches or any other bugs that may cross your floor.  Mixed with water in a sprayer - mist plants that have aphids or other bugs.  Lightly spray around your home in spots that you have noticed mold / mildew - it will kill it.  Add 1 c. once a week to your toilet tanks to keep them clean.  Spray on your cutting boards / kitchen sponges to kill germs.

Here is my story for you... This happened last October with my youngest daughter.  She woke up one morning with a small lump on the side of her breast. Within hours this small bothersome lump tripled in size and became quite tender.  She debated on waiting until Monday to visit her doctor (it was a Friday afternoon) but was scared - she listened to her inner voice and went to the hospital ER.  They took blood and seemed to be very concerned.  They told her that they thought she had MRSA.  For those of you that don't know what this is (I had no clue) it is one of the most aggressive and deadliest forms of Staph infection.  They had to lance her open to get at the infection.  They put her on two different types of antibiotics while they grew cultures to determine what would be best to fight the infection.  She went back two days later to the ER because she was having additional symptoms - light headed, fever, the lump had not reduced in size... She says now that she could feel her body shutting down - giving up.  They changed her antibiotics (a double dose of what is normally given for sickness).  I started researching and found that there is only a 50% chance that the drugs would work.  Most people, if they survive, are on antibiotics for 3 - 6 months.  I put her on 2 t. Colloidal Silver (3 times/day), 2 pkgs of Emergen-C, a garlic gelcap, and green tea every day for 10 consecutive days.  When she went back to the doctor the following week, he was shocked at what he found.  He said that he fully expected her to have to be admitted, and couldn't figure out how she was doing so well.  She told him of her "witch doctor" mama doing research.  The only known thing to kill MRSA with 100% efficiency is Colloidal Silver.  He was very impressed and very happy to see her improving so well.  It took a while - she was weak for several weeks after, but she has healed completely and knows the benefits of natural medicine.
