Diets - Marketing Ploy

When we start wanting to feel better - lose weight - get healthy, we automatically start thinking DIETs.  This has been reinforced by advertising companies all over the world.  We hear constantly about the stars that are on Jenny Craig or Weight Watchers... know that these are only money making schemes.  All these people look great - it isn't just from the change in their "dieting" menu but they also work out very hard to fit into those outfits! You need to break that marketing and very unhealthy thought process.  DIETs are BAD!

Instead of the idea - "I need to go on a diet," you need to be thinking "I need to change my life."  You need to change the way you look at food, you need to change the way you use food, you need to change the way you eat your food, you need to change the way you schedule your meals.  While there are many of us (yes, I am a guilty one too) that use food when we are depressed, or bored, or needy... while there are many of us that LOVE food - we need to take a healthy approach to our eating.

But before we look at each of those, I want to address these seemingly healthy diet fads and begin to change the way you view them.  We need a very well rounded color palate in our menu.  You need to eat foods of all colors - each and every type of fruit / vegetable / grain / seed has a benefit. The word "diet" in our times reflects restricting your food intake for a short amount of time.  Basically taking away what you WANT to eat for a short amount of time until your goal has been met.  And then what?  You go right back to that bad way of eating and looking at food and gain all the weight back - sometimes more.  Why?  Because you have not changed the way you look at food.

There are several diets out there that appear to be good for you - but they are not.  Again, it is a fad and there are issues with any system that is called a diet.  The RAW food diet is one of the worst perpetrators.  It sounds great, but what it doesn't share is the fact that our bodies have a hard time processing ONLY raw vegetables.  Lightly steamed or stir fried vegetables break them down just enough to make them easier to digest.  Fully cooked vegetables tend to strip all the nutrients from our foods - only steam / stirfry your vegetables until "bright" - meaning until they turn bright green.

How do I look at food?  Do I use it as a crutch when I am sad, depressed, lonely, bored?  Do I eat until I can't stop?  Do I crave only bad food and give in to those cravings?  Figure out your unhealthy attitude and work on changing it.

How do I use food?  Food should be viewed as a great tasting energy source.  The less energy you burn, the less food you should take in.  If you are fighting these things you need to make a change in your life.  When you are bored or depressed, force yourself to go out and go for a walk BEFORE you grab that chocolate bar.  Drink a full glass of water, or a cup of tea BEFORE you grab those chips.  And why do you have those things in your house anyway?  If you have an addictive personality - GET THEM OUT!  Don't let them be a temptation at midnight - I can hear that ice cream calling my name!!

How do I eat my food?  You didn't think this was going to be so complicated did you. :)  Pay attention to how you eat.  Do you drink liquids with your meals?  Do you eat fast?  Do you interact with others (if you live with others) when you eat?  Do you sit at a table together or do you sit in front of the TV?  Meal times should be a HAPPY time.  A time to catch up with family members.  This does several things.  You should have a positive feeling when you eat.  This helps your digestive tract work better - more in harmony with your body.  It also slows down how much you ingest and you will get to a comfortably full sensation and stop eating long before someone that eats very fast and then feels over stuffed.  Do not drink during meals.  Either drink before or after.  The beverage will fill you up faster and you will be hungry sooner than if you wait until after your meals to drink your beverages.  Eating in front of the TV is VERY unhealthy.  You continue to eat long beyond the time you are full.  You should eat slowly, and get to a comfortably full sensation.

How much do I eat and how often?  For anyone that has been told from birth that you MUST finish everything on your plate, I HIGHLY recommend that you get some smaller plates.  No joke.  You should eat a well rounded meal containing protein (doesn't always mean meat / eggs), fruits, vegetables.  One meal should contain grains / seeds / nuts.  I eat only one primary meal at mid-day and I eat my fruit in the morning, and my vegetables / nuts in the evening.  I only eat meat once a week and typically it is fish.  I eat my protein in my nuts / grains / seeds / dark green leafy vegetables.  I consume no dairy products; instead I use almond milk and goat cheese - if I want / crave any dairy type product (which is very rare).  Every person is different - some people feel that they MUST have lots of meat.  These people should be VERY active and eat only very lean meat products.  Some people love eggs and dairy.  These people too should be very active and watch how much they consume daily.

Food can be the enemy... but when broken down, it is we that are the enemy and we need to change our views on food... use it to your benefit.  Blessings!

Breathe In, Breathe Out... there is more to it than that!

We all breathe right?  It is easy right?  Breathe in.... Breathe out.  Well... it is a little more complicated than that.  Breathing techniques can help you relieve stress, reduce asthmatic attacks, heal you from allergies, live longer, reduce the chance of heart attacks, helps you center your body and release negative thoughts and energy, etc...

As a singer, we are taught HOW to breathe.. you can breathe through your nose or your mouth, from your throat, chest, diaphragm, toes, partially, deeply, aggressively, calmly, cooly... you name it there are many MANY different ways to breathe.  The PROPER way, depends on what outcome you want to have.  Here are some examples:

Strengthening Breathing - Doing strengthening breathing exercises will help expand the lung capacity you currently have - more capacity, better breathing - better brain power - more oxygen into your blood, muscles, etc... Oxygen helps you disperse toxins and grow good healthy cells.  Asthmatics and people prone to lung infections (bronchitis, pneumonia, upper respiratory infections) all would benefit from strengthening breathing.

Diaphragmatic Breathing - This is concentrated breathing from your diaphragm.  People with lung cancer, COPD, emphysema all could benefit from strengthening your diaphragm and this type of breathing that helps you force air out of your lungs.

Deep Breathing - Controlled deep breathing is most beneficial to people that are high strung, have high stress jobs, have a familial history of heart disease and / or stroke, and those that have high blood pressure.  Controlled deep breathing allows you to focus your attention on how and when you breathe - it calms your mind and soothes your body.  Ensure that when you are breathing in you think happy, beautiful, positive thoughts and as you breathe out you are releasing all negativity and tension.

The list above is only a start... there are so many ways that breathing properly will help enhance your life.  Here is another list with additional links to other types of breathing.  http://healing.about.com/od/breathwork/Breathwork.htm

This is an AWESOME link on Why it is so important to breathe properly and how we are damaging our bodies with our breathing.  http://www.holisticonline.com/yoga/hol_yoga_breathing_Importance.htm

If you have allergies, or are asthmatic and are working on changing your relationships (see post on Chakras) you may look to some herbs and specific foods to help alleviate the symptoms.  Again, I caution you - PLEASE make sure that you read all you can on herbs before you start using them.  http://www.livestrong.com/article/143453-herbal-remedies-breathing-problems/

Sit up! Take a deep breath - think a happy thought - and let your cares go!  LIVE!  Blessings!  E

Healthy Skin

Healthy skin again, like most things, is a combined effort.  It takes more than just washing your skin for it to be healthy.

Let's take your skin as a whole, before we break things down.  Some useful facts to think about.  Your skin is the largest organ your body has.  It protects the rest of your body by releasing toxins, changing sunlight into vitamin D, changes the green leafy vegetables into energy, moderates your internal temperature.. it is a very complex organ that has a lot of very important functions.

What causes damage to my skin?  Believe it or not, one of the worst offenders is suntan lotion - your SPF 50 does not protect your skin it actually is one of the reasons that the US has such a high percentage of skin cancer.  Think about it - do equatorial countries have high percentages of skin cancer?  These countries see more sunshine and more heat than any other countries in the world.  No, they do not.  The chemicals that make up your suntan lotion are not good for your skin when combined with.... the sun!  Be smart about going out into the sun - don't get burned, know your limits, expose your self gradually.  Getting burned is just as dangerous as suntan lotion.

What else damages skin?  Make-up can be dangerous.  When the beauty industry started many years ago - their first guinea pigs were starlets.  There were many of these women that went into seclusion because the make-up used damaged their skin.  Acne can cause permanent damage to your skin.  Stress also can cause damage.  And finally dehydration can cause a lot of problems including cancer and tumors.

Remember that your skin is an organ, and every ailment you have is a "warning sign" that there is a bigger problem brewing.  If you have rashes, acne, eczema - discover the underlying issue and resolve.  Don't ignore the little things as they grow into much larger issues.

So, some natural healing methods for skin issues...

Acne.  Acne for most is a teenage ailment, but more and more adults are finding they are having breakouts more often.  This tends to have two reasons, one - stress.  Stress is one of the primary reasons for massive quick outbreaks.... you have a date on Saturday, want to look your best, and voila! a huge pimple pops out Friday.  Deal with your nerves and stress.  Second - WHAT YOU EAT.  Are you eating fast food?  prepackaged food? lots of fried / greasy foods?  All are major contributors.  There can be more severe forms of acne and these tend to be related to mental well being.  You have something in your life that you need to address and resolve.  And it comes out in your skin.

Eczema.  Eczema can be a debilitating disease.  Anything that is chronic goes hand in hand with immune breakdown.  Your immune system is not functioning properly and needs help.  Eczema also could be some type of an allergic reaction - something that touches the skin (cloth, soap, detergent, softener, metal) or something internal (food allergy, artificial coloring, pesticides, artificial colors, preservatives).  Eczema can also be a hyper-sensitivity - a reaction to normal every day things.  The first recommendation is to strengthen your immune system - that is foods high in vitamins C and B complex.

What are you feeding your skin?  Are you taking care of it?  Be careful what you use to wash your skin, soften your skin, etc.  Make sure the products you use are hypo-allergic, and don't have preservatives, artificial colors, or chemicals.  Drink enough water - it is surprising how much your body will reward you if you drink enough water daily.  Get sunshine!!!  This is vital to a healthy body.. Enjoy!  Blessings.

Hemorrhoids

Diet can play a major part in relieving hemorrhoids.  Countries that eat more roughage - vegetables, seeds, nuts, grains - have far fewer outbreaks than the United States.  People with food allergies that cause diarrhea or constipation are also contributing factors.

http://www.hemaron.com/hemorrhoids-treatment/hemorrhoids-causes.htm

Prevention: make sure you are eating enough grains, leafy green vegetables, seeds, nuts, and grains.  These foods help move wastes along the intestinal tract rather than allowing it to build up.  With the proper amount in your diet, you should have multiple bowel movements a day with minimal odor.  If you are prone to diarrhea, find out why (lactose intolerance is one possibility) and ensure that you are eating properly.  Drink enough water to aid in moving toxins and wastes out of your body.

Alternative measures to relieve symptoms: Obviously diet and water are key.  In addition there are some additional measures you can take.

Ensure you are comfortable in your clothing and that you are wearing cotton and natural fibers as much as you can - these will allow the body to breathe.  Loose comfortable clothing will be less binding and restrictive.

Sitz baths are recommended.  Add Epsom Salts to your warm bathing water and soak until water cools.  Everyone is affected differently by the amount of Epsom Salts in their bathwater, so you will need to experiment.  Another sitz bath option is to add a teaspoon of ginger into your water.

Hot / Cold Compresses.  When applying heat and cold always remember to start and end with cold.  The heat brings blood to that area to help heal, and the cold draws out the toxins / acids in the muscles.  Apply each for about 10 minutes each.  Both moist and dry work with hemorrhoids.

Omegas.  Ensure you are getting your proper amounts of Omega 3/6/9 in your diet.  You may want to increase a bit if constipated, until bowel movements are returned to normal.

Anti-inflammatory foods.  If your hemorrhoids are painful, ensure you are eating foods that are anti-inflammatory.

Windowsill Herbs

We tend to eat WAY too much salt. This only increases our probability of dehydration.  Replacing table salt with sea salt helps, but herbs are a wonderful way of helping you reduce your salt intake.  These windowsill herbs - easy to grow inside or out, very fragrant, easy to harvest, easy to dry - should be standard in your daily cooking, menu planning.

Cilantro - Cilantro is now one of my most favorite herbs.  For most you will either LOVE it, or HATE it.  When I first tasted it, I was one of those that HATED it.  We were in Hawaii, and I was being introduced to Vietnamese food (Yumm!!) and we ordered Cha Gio (tiny spring rolls) and received the full platter of herbs and vegetables.  We also ordered Pho (soup) and this too came with lots of herbs and vegetables.  I kept tasting this one STRONG flavor that I was unfamiliar with and started picking at the herbs until I found what it was that I kept tasting - Cilantro.  We find Cilantro in lots of things - but it isn't as strong, if it isn't fresh.  Salsa, Mexican foods, Thai, Vietnamese, etc.... It is a very versatile herb and once your palate is used to its strong flavor, you too may learn to love it in many things.  I season my quesadillas and salads with lots of cilantro.  As a medicinal, it helps to remove heavy metals and toxins from the body. It is an anti-inflammatory antiseptic, and an antifungal.  The oils in Cilantro are beneficial to our digestive tract, aids in normalizing hormone levels, balances sugar levels, among others.

Oregano - Most of us are familiar with Oregano - heavily used in cooking Italian food.  Oregano has a wonderful aroma and can be grown indoors or out.  There are many varieties, you may find more to your liking than others.  Oregano is an antiviral, antibacterial, and antiparacitic.  Like Cilantro, it is very high in antioxidants - strengthening the immune system.  The oil in Oregano also helps to strengthen and increase flexibility of muscles and joints.  Fresh Oregano, like most of your green leafy vegetables / herbs are high in vitamins and minerals.  Aids in digestion, stimulates menstrual flow, relieves muscle spasms when given as an infusion, may slow aging, and reduces cancer risk.

Basil - Did you know there are MANY different types of Basil?  And all of them have a very different taste?  Thai Basil - spicy, Sweet Basil - obviously sweet, Lemon Basil - lemony, etc.... Basil is another "windowsill" herb.   Many people grow it in their kitchens as it is frequently used in many dishes and is easy to grow.  Basil has powerful flavonoids to help protect cell structure and growth - meaning it is a natural cancer fighter.  it is an anti-inflammatory and an antibacterial.  It has been shown to fight ecoli and staph infections successfully.  It also fights heart disease, and helps to normalize cholesterol levels.  Play around with the different types of Basil in your dishes for a variety of flavors.

Dill - While not quite a windowsill herb... it is very fragrant and easy to grow.  Dill is another of my favorites... I regularly get a mix of herbs and leaf lettuces and mix for a salad rather than traditional head lettuce.  The more you mix your colors and types, the better flavor and better nutrition you gain from your salads.  Dill has been long known for its digestive calming.  The flavonoids in Dill also are cancer fighters.  Dill also aids in normalizing menses and fights insomnia.  It is a relaxant, antispasmodic, and a diuretic.

This is just a short list.. the point I am trying to make is that your fresh herbs are very, very beneficial to day to day health and if you grow your own - fairly inexpensive.  Keeping them in pots in your house will give your home a warm fragrant scent, and will provide you with lasting health!  E

Immunizations

There are many people that are pulling their kids out of public schools to home school them for one single reason... immunizations.  I read in the paper about parents  not being able to sue the companies that make immunizations and was again inundated with questions on Immunizations.

To immunize or not has been a controversial subject for 200 years.  Care to guess how long we have been immunizing people?  :)  Approximately 200 years.  Let's take a side trip - Why do we have two types of medicine - Allopathic (Western Medicine) and Naturopathic Medicine?  When we go back to the beginnings of medicine (as we know it), we find that both types of medicine existed and worked TOGETHER.  Naturopathy was day to day medicine and Allopathy was used in more severe / surgical situations.  Eastern medicine followed Naturopathy and Western medicine followed Allopathy.  And when Pharmaceutical companies took hold in the US - that only intensified.  We have a marketing campaign that teaches us from our earliest moments that we just have to take a pill and make it all better. So, why do I give you this little bit of history?

The creation of immunizations was in an effort to reduce the number of deaths from major diseases.  In the Allopathic world - this makes perfect sense.  Disease needs to be destroyed at all costs and the only way to do that is to immunize and take pharmaceuticals.

In the Naturopathic world - it makes no sense what so ever.  If your body is in its perfect state - metal, exercise, diet all are working together, there is no disease.  Your body is able to heal all its ailments completely on its own.

So, with all this being said... I will leave it up to you.  Please find below several links to viable sources on immunizations:

Create a More Beautiful You!

What are our three pillars?  Exercise, Diet, Mental Well Being.  Right... so, let's create a plan using these three to make a more beautiful you... it is easier than you may think...

Sleep - your body needs 6 - 8 hours of sleep each night.  This allows your mind to rest, body to heal - when your body is at rest it can focus its attentions to healing the body and creating new cells.  Even if you have trained your body to do with less sleep, it doesn't mean that you need less sleep.  Sleep deprivation causes you to age more quickly, and be more susceptible to illness.

Exercise - in a recent post we discussed your need for exercise.  Exercise is good for both the mind and body.  Without proper exercise you are prone to depression, organ weaknesses, and weakened immune system.  Get up!  Get out!  You are to strive for the exercise high after a 30 - 45 minute sustained cardio workout.

Water - I can't tell you enough how important water is for your body.  Most humans are chronically dehydrated which promotes many health problems - heart disease, Alzheimer's, strokes, arthritis, etc... Water removes the toxins and excessive minerals / vitamins from your body without the proper amount these things must be deposited somewhere.  Toxins get deposited in muscle tissue, minerals between bones, nerves.    Water also helps promote healthy skin tone and texture.

Diet - You are what you eat.  But more importantly, you are only as healthy as what you eat.  You can't eat whatever you want and expect your body to reward you.  Eating the proper foods to feed your body is imperative.  They will also help improve your mood, equalize your weight, and lower your medical bills.  Eat only when you are hungry.  Eat every color of food, but more of the dark green leafy vegetables and dark fruits than the others.  Eat plenty of grains, nuts, legumes, and seeds.  Eat your complex carbohydrates in the morning.

Friends / Family - Develop a core circle of friends and family that you can depend / rely upon.  You need to have good personal relationships for a good mental well being.  Interacting with those you love - caring for and being cared for is essential to be happy.

Volunteer - Find a way to give back to your community.  Be a part of something bigger - create a group to help others.  Volunteering gives us a feeling of self worth that is important to be well rounded.

Do what you love - What do you want to be when you grow up?  So many don't have any idea until they are in their mid to late 30s.  Discover your passion and find a way to do it!  Set a goal - move forward - and do it!  Don't let anyone stop you from fulfilling your passion - you may have to take one class a year for 20 years - but eventually you will succeed!

Dance - Dance, sing, smile, hug, laugh... these things are ESSENTIAL.  When was the last time you laughed so hard you cried?  These positive things release chemicals in the brain that fight cancer, and give your immune system a boost.  They fight depression and weight gain.  Put a little joy in your life!

Get sunshine - Spend at least 30 minutes a day in the sunshine.  When the sun hits our skin a chemical reaction takes place and Vitamin D is created.  Sunlight also activates the pineal gland which activates tryptamines (happy chemicals) in the brain.  Sunshine also converts the Chlorophyll from your green leafy vegetables into energy.

All of these things will help keep your body, your skin, your mind, and YOU young... and hopefully happier!  Like everything else... baby steps!
